Why Tallow Skincare Is Making a Comeback

An old-fashioned ingredient is finding its way back into modern skincare—and there’s more to the story than social media hype.
If you’ve spent any time in the skincare world lately, you’ve probably noticed something unexpected showing up between the serums, peptides, and elaborate 10-step routines:
Beef tallow.
Yes, tallow.
At first, the idea of using rendered beef fat as skincare can sound a little unusual. We understand. But tallow isn’t a newly invented beauty trend. Long before bathroom counters were crowded with dozens of bottles and complicated ingredient lists, animal fats were among the traditional materials people used in soaps, balms, and skin preparations.
Now, as more people begin questioning whether skincare really needs to be so complicated, tallow is finding its way back into the conversation.
So what exactly is it—and why are so many people putting it on their skin?
First Things First: What Is Tallow?

Tallow is purified, rendered animal fat, most commonly from cattle.
The rendering process separates and purifies the fat from the original tissue. When properly rendered and prepared for cosmetic use, the result is a stable fat that can be incorporated into rich, water-free balms and other skincare formulations.
One reason tallow works particularly well in balm-style skincare is simple: it’s a fat.
Our skin naturally relies on lipids—fats—to help maintain its protective outer barrier. That barrier plays an important role in reducing water loss and protecting the skin from the outside environment.
This doesn’t mean tallow is magically identical to your skin or that it can “cure” skin conditions. Skincare science is more complicated than that.
What it does mean is that a thoughtfully formulated, lipid-rich balm can help soften the skin, support moisture retention, and leave dry skin feeling more comfortable.
And sometimes, simple works beautifully.
Why Does Tallow Feel So Different From Regular Lotion?
Here’s something many people don’t realize:
A lotion and a balm are very different products.
Traditional lotions and creams usually contain a significant amount of water. Because water and oil don’t naturally stay mixed, these products typically require emulsifiers to hold the formula together. Products containing water also need an appropriate preservation system to protect against microbial growth.
A traditional tallow balm, on the other hand, can be completely water-free, or anhydrous.
Instead of evaporating quickly like the water portion of a lotion, a balm leaves behind a layer of emollient ingredients that helps soften the skin and slow moisture loss.
That’s also why you generally need much less balm than lotion.
If you’re used to scooping out a large amount of body lotion, applying tallow the same way can leave you wondering why you suddenly look extremely…shiny.
With a concentrated balm, a little really does go a long way.
Tallow Isn’t Magic—and That’s Actually the Point
The skincare industry loves a miracle ingredient.
One year, everyone needs one particular acid. The next year, it’s a new peptide, botanical extract, or ingredient with a name most of us have to Google before we can pronounce it.
Tallow doesn’t need to be another miracle claim.
Its appeal is actually much simpler.
It can serve as the rich, nourishing foundation of a minimalist skincare formula without requiring an enormous list of ingredients.
And when tallow is paired thoughtfully with complementary oils and ingredients, a balm can be formulated for a beautiful texture, spreadability, and skin feel.
At Real Honest Tallow, for example, we don’t believe adding more ingredients automatically makes a product better.
Every ingredient should have a reason for being there.
That philosophy is at the heart of what we make.
What About All Those Vitamins You Hear About?
You may have seen tallow described online as being “packed” with vitamins A, D, E, and K.
This is where good skincare information requires a little nuance.
The exact nutrient composition of rendered tallow can vary based on factors such as the animal’s diet, the source of the fat, and how it was processed. That means broad claims about exact vitamin levels in every jar of tallow should be treated carefully unless the finished product has actually been tested.
What we can say is that tallow is primarily composed of fatty acids, including saturated and monounsaturated fats.
From a skincare perspective, its value doesn’t need to depend on exaggerated claims.
Sometimes an ingredient is worthwhile simply because it helps create a rich, effective moisturizer that makes your skin feel really good.
Is Tallow Good for Your Face?
This is probably one of the biggest questions people have.
And the most accurate answer is:
It depends on your skin and the formula.
There is no single skincare ingredient that works perfectly for every person.
Some people love rich, oil-based facial products, particularly when their skin feels dry, tight, or uncomfortable. Others—especially those who prefer very lightweight products—may find a heavy balm too occlusive for everyday facial use.
The amount you apply matters, too.
If you’re trying a tallow balm on your face for the first time, start small.
And we mean small.
Take a tiny amount, warm it between clean fingertips, and gently press or massage it into slightly damp skin.
You can always add more.
Your face does not need to be frosted like a cupcake.
Why Ingredient Quality Still Matters
“Natural” doesn’t automatically mean well-formulated, and a short ingredient list doesn’t automatically make a product superior.
How a product is made matters.
The quality of the raw ingredients matters.
Clean handling matters.
Proper rendering matters.
Thoughtful formulation matters.
Packaging and storage matter.
And when water is introduced into a cosmetic formula, proper preservation becomes especially important.
This is something we believe consumers deserve to understand.
We love simple skincare, but simple should still be thoughtful.
That’s one reason we believe in making our products in small batches and being intentional about what goes into them.
Why Are People Going Back to Simpler Skincare?
Maybe the more interesting question isn’t why tallow is becoming popular.
Maybe it’s why so many people are suddenly craving simplicity.
For years, we’ve been told that better skin requires more.
More steps.
More products.
More active ingredients.
A morning routine. A nighttime routine. A weekly routine for the routine.
And while modern cosmetic science has created some incredible products, skincare doesn’t have to be complicated simply for the sake of being complicated.
There’s something refreshing about turning a jar around and actually understanding what you’re putting on your skin.
That doesn’t mean every synthetic ingredient is bad.
It doesn’t mean every natural ingredient is good.
And it certainly doesn’t mean everyone needs to throw away everything in their bathroom and replace it with tallow.
It simply means consumers are asking better questions.
What is in this?
Why is it here?
Does my skin actually need all of this?
We think those are questions worth asking.
Our Journey Back to Simple

Real Honest Tallow started with two sisters from Southwest Iowa and a pretty simple frustration.
We wanted skincare that felt good on our skin without feeling like we needed a chemistry degree to understand the label.
Like so many women, we had experienced changing skin—dryness, tightness, breakouts, and the frustrating feeling that buying another product somehow always seemed to be the answer.
Eventually, we started looking in a different direction.
Instead of asking:
“What else can we add?”
We started asking:
“What do we actually need?”
That question changed everything.
We discovered the beauty of tallow-based skincare, began experimenting with formulations, researched ingredients, and started creating products we genuinely wanted to use ourselves.
Then something unexpected happened.
Other people wanted them, too.
And Real Honest Tallow was born.
We Believe You Should Know What You’re Putting on Your Skin.
We’re not here to tell you that tallow is a miracle.
We actually think skincare deserves more honesty than that.
We’re here because we believe beautiful skincare can be simple, intentional, and thoughtfully made.
We believe ingredient lists should have a purpose.
We believe small-batch products can still be taken seriously.
And we believe you deserve to understand what you’re buying—not just be sold a pretty jar and a list of promises.
We’re still learning, creating, improving, and dreaming up what comes next.
But one thing won’t change:
If we wouldn’t feel good about putting it on our own skin or sharing it with the people we love, we don’t want to put our name on it.
Because sometimes going forward means looking back at what worked, understanding it better, and making it our own.
Simple ingredients. Thoughtful skincare. Honestly made.
Real Honest Tallow.
